Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is web hosting?
Web hosting is the act of renting space and bandwidth so that you may publish your website online.
Q: What exactly is web space, and what are my limits with Get Web Services?
Web space is the size your website can be. HTML pages (basic pages) are usually very small, but it is the extra images, scripts, and even databases that can take up large amounts of disk space. Your email accounts are also added up in the total amount of space available to you. Please view our hosting packages to view the amount of web space available on each package, additional web space can be purchased for a small amount each month.
Q: How do I track how many people visit my website?
Get Web Services hosting accounts include site statistics, these can be viewed from the admin area on your hosting account, eg. You can organise a meeting with our team during office hours if you wish to learn more about site statistics.
Q: What are PHP, ASP, Perl, etc?
These are all programming languages which are referred to by their acronyms.
- PHP – "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor"
- ASP – Active Server Pages
- Perl – Practical Extraction and Reporting Language
Each programming language has its own benefits and uses. Get Web Services can help you find a solution that best fits your needs.
Q: Do I have to change my domain name if I change host?
No. Provided that you are the registrant (owner) of the domain you can simply update your nameservers on your domain. Contact the Get Web Services team if you would like any assistance making the change.
Q: How can I pay for web hosting?
Get Web Services have three billing cycles for you to choose from, payment for web hosting is in advance:
- Monthly – a credit card must be provided for automatic payments
- Quarterly – payment can be made via credit card, cheque or direct deposit
- Annually – payment can be made via credit card, cheque or direct deposit
Accounts that are more than 14 days overdue will be suspended until payment is received, for this reason most clients opt for our automatic monthly credit card payments.
Q: What are subdomains?
Subdomains are an extension of your domain. For example, your site is www.mydomain.com. A subdomain would be members.mydomain.com, subdomains are usually treated as separate sites from the main domain site.
Q: How to I upload my site?
When you sign up for your Get Web Services hosting account you will be emailed a username and password and IP address to use in your FTP program. We recommend FileZilla, this is a freeware FTP program and can be downloaded from downloads.com.
Q: I have a fast internet connection (Broadband/ ADSL) can I just host my own site?
You could, but that's definitely not recommended. Most ISPs have clauses that do not let you use your internet connection for web hosting – doing so could result in termination of your account. Also, think of the headaches it could cause, making sure your system is secure so that no one can hack into it, having your computer on 24/7, and other such problems. Web hosts use powerful servers with lots of RAM and high performance hard disks, and have internet connections at speeds far higher than what residential services can provide. There is also the issue of support, if something goes wrong, it will be your job to fix it – you will not have a professional to correct the problem.
Q: Why don't I just go with the cheapest hosting?
A web host has to make a profit to continue operating. Some hosts do not properly understand the market, and may be pricing themselves too cheap. You need to take into consideration the level of support that you will receive if anything should go wrong, a cheap host in some cases may not provide any support (or very limited, unhelpful) or may charge you per hour to fix a problem. Some other things to look out for with cheap hosts is that they may try to limit the activity of the customer through their terms of service and acceptable use policy. Some hosts scrimp on quality bandwidth and overall performance.
"We have no argument with competitors who charge less – they realise what their service is worth."
